Ericsson, RED Technologies and Qualcomm Inc. conduct the first Licensed Shared Access (LSA) pilot in France

Enabling 5G through licensed shared spectrum

The most technically extensive pilot worldwide of the recently devised spectrum sharing solution Licensed Shared Access (LSA) was launched in Paris today by French Digital Affairs Minister, Axelle Lemaire, at the office of the award-winning French start-up, RED Technologies. Under the pilot, spectrum allocated to the French Ministry of Defence in the 2.3-2.4 GHz band will be shared using Ericsson’s radio access network. Pioneering technology from RED Technologies, Ericsson and Qualcomm Inc. underpin this pilot.

The success of the French LSA pilot should lead to the release of high volumes of licensed spectrum in France within the next 24 months, further enabling market growth, competition and innovation. On a wider scale, the application of LSA to the 2.3-2.4 GHz band across Europe will release enough spectrum to enable innovative 5G services for all EU citizens.

The combination of Ericsson’s latest Carrier Aggregation technology with RED Technologies’ leading spectrum assessment and management technologies is unique to this pilot. These solutions, combined within a unique state-of-the art LSA user framework enabled by Qualcomm Technologies and applicable to 5G, are a powerful world first.

The roles of the project participants are as follows:

  • Ericsson: Radio Access solution including new Carrier Aggregation technology and Radio Dot System, enabling innovative small cell deployments for high performance indoor voice and data coverage and capacity.
  • RED Technologies: provided a dynamic spectrum management platform based on live radio environment maps and self-organising networking engines.
  • Qualcomm Technologies provided 4G devices powered by a Qualcomm ®SnapdragonTM processor

The French regulatory authority ARCEP and the Ministry of Defence authorised the use of the 2.3-2.4 Ghz band for the pilot.

Recent industry and government collaboration on the issue of spectrum shortage has resulted in the development of the Licensed Shared Access (LSA) approach to sharing licensed spectrum securely. Some large incumbent holders of licensed spectrum (e.g. military, satellite, some commercial users) do not use all of their frequencies, all of the time, everywhere. The LSA model enables these incumbents to sub-let their unused spectrum – without interfering with incumbent usage - to mobile operators through multi-lateral agreements overseen by regulators. Incumbents can share their spectrum in time, frequency and/or geography.

Favoriser l’arrivée de la 5G à travers l’accès partagé sous licence de fréquences radio

L’expérimentation techniquement la plus aboutie de la nouvelle solution d’accès partagé sous licence de fréquences radio (Licensed Shared Access ou LSA) est lancée à Paris aujourd’hui par Axelle Lemaire, secrétaire d’État chargée du Numérique, depuis le siège de la start-up française RED Technologies. Cette expérimentation démontre l’utilisation en accès partagé des fréquences allouées au ministère français de la Défense dans la bande 2,3-2,4 GHz en utilisant le réseau d’accès radio d’Ericsson. Pionniers de ces technologies, Ericsson, RED Technologies et Qualcomm Technologies Inc. sont à l’origine de ce projet.

L’expérimentation française du LSA devrait ouvrir la voie dans les 24 prochains mois à la mise à disposition en France d’une quantité significative de fréquences en accès partagé sous licence, dans l’intention de continuer à stimuler la croissance du marché, la concurrence et l’innovation. À une plus grande échelle, l’application du LSA à la bande 2,3-2,4 GHz en Europe devrait libérer suffisamment de spectre pour pouvoir, à terme, fournir des services 5G innovants à tous les citoyens européens.

La nouvelle technologie d’agrégation de porteuses d’Ericsson combinée aux technologies avancées d’évaluation et de gestion de spectre élaborées par RED Technologies confère à cette expérimentation son caractère unique. Leur association au nouveau cadre utilisateur LSA de pointe élaboré par Qualcomm Technologies et applicable à la 5G en fait une première mondiale.

Les rôles des participants au projet se répartissent comme suit :

  • Ericsson a dirigé le déploiement de la solution radio, avec notamment sa toute dernière technologie d’agrégation de porteuses, du système Radio Dot, permettant le déploiement innovant de petites cellules assurant une capacité et une couverture voix et données de haute performance à l’intérieur des bâtiments.
  • RED Technologies a fourni la plate-forme de gestion dynamique de spectre, basée sur des cartes d’environnement radio en temps réel et des moteurs de réseaux auto-organisés.
  • Qualcomm Technologies a fourni les terminaux mobiles 4G équipés de processeurs® SnapdragonTM.

L’ARCEP et le ministère de la Défense ont autorisé l’utilisation de la bande 2,3-2,4 GHz pour l’expérimentation.
